AUSTRALIA’S most popular and iconic sport is about to get a new name: boxing.
The world heavyweight title fight between Cat ZINGANO and Joanna is scheduled for Friday night in Melbourne.
The bout is being promoted by the Australian Sports Commission as a ‘world heavyweight title’ fight.
But it has been called the ‘women’s boxing’ fight and the title is set to be fought as a bout between two women.
Boxing Australia executive director Tony McNeil said it was important the sport was recognised and celebrated by the community.
“It is a unique sport that has a long and storied history,” Mr McNeil told ABC Radio Melbourne.
“The women’s boxing division has been around for many years and it has a unique history.”‘
A lot of the greats have been women’Boxing Victoria chief executive Mark Richardson said women’s sport had been a part of Australian culture for a long time.
“We know that women’s sports are not just about the men, women’s are a part for everybody, the whole family,” Mr Richardson said.
“That’s why boxing has been a key part of our heritage.”
“It has become a part and parcel of our cultural fabric.”
When women do fight, the sport becomes a part that goes far beyond just the boxers and they are the champions.
